If you're a fan of Lilac Blossom Photography for a while, then you know that I love to do personal projects that are different from my usual photography. In 2015, I successfully completed a 52 Week Project, taking one photo a week based on a weekly theme. I actually attempted that task 4 times prior to that, but never was successful. I took 2016 off but now in 2017, I hope to complete a 365 day challenge. In essence, I'll take one photo each and every day for the entire year. Abounding Love

From the moment I stepped in the front door, I could tell this family shared a lot of love for each other. You could see it right away. From the hugs & kisses to the kindness of their voices. I felt the love too. Of course, I came with Dunkin Donuts and fulfilled their orders. All new parents need coffee and something to eat, right? So, maybe they loved me for that. But when you spend hours with people, you get to know them pretty well. I really enjoyed my time during the session and probably stayed a bit too long but it was worth it. We got so many amazing shots and these are some of my favorites. Enjoy!

Sunset on the Beach (again!)

Yes, I love LOVE these sunset on the beach sessions! OMG the lighting is just perfect and the sunsets are amazing! I can't stress enough how much fun it is and the great time families have on these shoots. I only like to schedule one per week because we watch the weather and wait for the best night we can predict for a gorgeous sunset!!! I've photographed this family several times, starting with mom when she was expecting her second daughter. They are a beautiful family and so great to work with! Here are some of my favorites from their session. Believe it or not, someone already inquired about these sessions for next year (yep, Summer of 2015) so if you think you want a session, let me know NOW and I'll pencil you in!!! :D

I had the pleasure of meeting 6 wonderful photographers online almost 3 years ago. In this time, we have all grown as photographers and friends. Last year, we decided to all get together and meet and have a photography retreat. 4 of the 6 were able to come and we had a BLAST! We spent time laughing, taking photos, and strengthening friendships and bonds we have all formed over the past couple of years. We were up past midnight giggling like little school girls and just truly enjoying each other's company. I was sad to see our time together come to an end. I love these women like sisters and will never forget this experience. I can't wait to do it again!!!!

52 Week Project ::Week 29:: Shadow as Subject

To Infinity and BEYOND!!! This week, the theme is shadows as the subject. So, Buzz Lightyear here was helpful with his long shadow at dusk. I'm glad someone around here had fun playing with him. I can't remember the last time my 4 yr old played with this toy. Hmmmm time to clean the toy room and make some donations, I think!

52 Week Project ::Week 28:: Water

Water. Sure I could go the the beach, grab some beautiful shots of the ocean or even the sound. I live on Long Island, after all. Nah. I also thought about macro shots of water drops on a leaf or something. That's fun. But this week's theme kind of just fell in my lap. I had some friends over this weekend and we were enjoying my new pool in the backyard. My girlfriend was changing her 1 yr old and I got a glimpse of the cute baby bottom! So, here she is, near water wanting to go IN the water.

**Note: Mom was inches from her just off camera. She was not unattended and was never in danger of actually going in the pool! Safety first!!**

Pretty in Pink

Pretty in pink and purple and any other girl color you can think of…. this family welcomed their third child, a girl into their family! They already have 2 adorable boys but now a girl. So, move aside trains and trucks, soon dolls and princesses will be taking over the place! xoxo I was especially grateful to shoot this newborn session because she’s the daughter of a very good friend of mine. xoxo

52 Week Project ::Week 27:: Red, White & Blue

It’s Fourth of July week during week 27 and I was able to capture the good ol’ red, white and blue in several ways: One with my son while I played around with some other photographers in their studio and we practiced studio lighting. The other were some fireworks we watched from my backyard. Happy Summer everyone!!!

52 Week Project ::Week 26:: Mulligan

We’re 1/2 way there! I can’t believe this is the 1/2 way point of this project! It’s fitting that the theme of choice for this week is a mulligan or do-over. So, I chose to redo the one week that really stumped me: Low Key. These cherries were super ripe this week – almost too ripe, but served as the perfect subject for my theme this week. So, here it is again: Low key!

52 Week Project ::Week 25:: Slow Down

Yep, slow down the shutter. Make it really long (like a few seconds or more!) So, by chance, we found a snail in our backyard. I couldn’t believe how PERFECT this was for this week’s theme. So, I set up my camera on our patio, focused, set the exposure for 13 seconds (took a few trials before I knew which setting, but this was it!) and caught this snail on the move. He looks blurry because it actually took him 13 seconds to move 1 millimeter or so! I got that movement blur from him moving from point A to point B. LOL I told my 4 yr old son that I was going to make the snail look super fast like in the movie Turbo! Did it work? I think so! #summer2014 #52weekproject #lilacblossomphotography

52 Week Project ::Week 23:: Low Key

This is the week that really stumped me. I just didn’t have inspiration, despite all the great submissions by other photographers on the Clickin Moms forum. So, I made this one up weeks after, but am not 100% thrilled with it. I added a little grain to add to the moodiness of it. Meh. It’s ok.

High Key. Lots of bright (whites) in a photo without many low tones (darks). I just love this one of a client’s daughter in her room. So pretty!!!

Graceful Communion

I really did enjoy working with this little girl and her family. We had a beautiful day, despite a terrible weather forecast. It was almost too nice, if that's possible. Toward the end of the session she said to me, "Danielle? This seems like more than 45 minutes, but I'm glad because I'm having fun!" I told her that it was longer than 45 minutes (the scheduled amount of time) because I was having so much fun! This is why I love taking photos for families. It's not about keeping an eye on the clock. It's about capturing it all, even if it takes longer than expected. Here are just a few of the photos - with special attention to detail, of course!

Greek Goddess

This little Greek Goddess was born bigger than most babies are at a month old. But despite her chunkiness, she slept like a dream at this session when she was just a week old. Her older brother was just as big at birth and was also a dream. Their parents must be so lucky to have such good babies like these. Anyway, I had so much fun and mom loves the color purple, like me, so it was doubly fun to do it up!

52 Week Project ::Week 19:: Rhythm

My 52 Week Photo Challenge really challenged me this week! The theme for this past week was rhythm. But it wasn't about taking a photo of someone playing an instrument. It was about visual rhythm. So, here's my take on it with a little bit of an explanation. In music, there's always two "tracks"; high notes, and the low tones of the bass. With me so far? Ok, so these tulips kind of visually give this illusion to me. The pink ones down low are the bass and the yellow ones are playing a sweet melody with some high notes. I don't know if that makes any sense to you, but it does to me!

Thomas' 1st Birthday Cake Smash

I've said it time and time again. I LOVE to do 1st birthday photos, especially when it involves a cake! You never know what you're going to get with a 1 year old. Either they dive right in, cry, or something in between. We got a little of all 3 at this session. I think he really enjoyed dipping his toes in the cake most!

52 Week Project ::Week 18:: Leading Lines

Leading lines is a rule of composition where the line will bring your eye right to the subject. When I shot this Communion Portrait, I had this theme in mind! I’m also including the use of framing as well, even though it’s not part of the theme!

I just love this family. They are such great people and the kids are so much fun. They are no strangers to my camera. I think I've photographed them in every season for every different reason! Baby #4 is on her way in June and I look forward to meet her! In the meantime, we had some fun at the local farm, took some photos, and the kids played, and played, and played. It doesn't get any better than that, does it? Here are some of my favorites from today. My guess is, more will follow shortly.

It was my choice this week as to what I'd photograph. Since the blossoms are in full effect, I took a stroll down the street from my house and photographed whatever I found blooming. Apologies to the neighbors for stepping on your property. This was pretty fun for me to do! Now I'm just waiting on the lilac blossoms! ;)

Spring is ALMOST in full bloom and I was really hoping to get some nice spring blossoms for this week. It didn't happen. But I did get out and visit Sagamore Hill this past weekend with a friend. Here's my little guy on the beach on the grounds of Teddy Roosevelt's home!

And here's an archived photo from last year of a bunny in my backyard. Pretty soon there will be tons of them all over the place! Happy Spring!

52 Week Project ::Week 15:: Street Photography

Street Photography is kind of fun. I tried to use my son as a decoy, but got brave on a few without his help. This isn't my usual type of photography, but this is exactly why I'm doing this 52 week project. It helps get me outside of my comfort zone and forces me to shoot things I never normally would. This weekend, we had gorgeous weather here on Long Island and my husband was off from work (which almost never happens on a weekend!) So, we spent our days outside enjoying the local parks and restaurants. It was a perfect spring weekend. Enjoy these photos, which I happen to think fits this week's theme perfectly!

Food. Food photography is fun - something I always wanted to do, but never had a reason. So this week I had a reason and never got to it. This week goes down as one that I'll need to "re-do" at some point.... For now, you will have to enjoy the food in my fridge, as is.... no staging, cleaning, organizing, or adjusting. 52 Week Project ::Week 12:: Rule of Thirds

Photography 101: Rule of Thirds. It's that hashtag, tic tac toe grid you see when trying to crop pictures. Know it? Well, in the photography world, those little lines mean something. I won't bore you with the details of it, but this week's assignment was to capture something using ROT. I decided to use it in a way that's very different for me. I helped a friend shoot her son's first birthday cake smash. She did all the work, I was just guiding and encouraging her. This is part of the mess her son made. I just love the colors of the cake so decided to use this for this week's theme. ENJOY!

52 Week Project ::Week 11:: Negative Space

Negative Space. What does that mean? Well, it can mean a lot of things. I interpreted this week's theme to mean my subject was just a small part of the big picture. Here's my son playing in the duvet from my bed while I was changing the sheets. Just a simple weekly routine but he has so much fun making a pile and jumping in it. I really love capturing simple moments like this.

52 Week Project ::Week 10:: Alternative Light

Week 10's theme was alternative light. I was initially stumped. What was I going to photograph? But then my 4 year old son came into the bathroom, shut the door and the lights, and well, I couldn't really move (if you know what I'm sayin'). Then it hit me. The light spilling in from the outside through the cracks. PERFECT! So, a minute or so later, I was grabbing my camera, and setting up a few long exposure shots. These were taken with an exposure of 10-30 seconds. One is the lights from my son's turtle nightlight. Another is a small green pen light and I drew a heart twice over. The last one is the door with the light creeping in. All three taken in my bathroom.

52 Week Project ::Week 9:: One-in-Ten

One in Ten. Take a photo of one subject (object or person), ten different ways. I have to give credit where credit is due. I got inspiration for this blog from another photographer, Alex Rickard, when I stumbled upon her blog. There are so many different possibilities for this assignment, but I decided to focus on "Bear" - my son's lovey. It was hard to focus on the bear and not my son, but I think I managed to pull it off.

This is the first lovey he ever had. In fact, we have 3 of them. But once he was a little older, maybe about 2 1/2, he noticed subtle differences in the 3 and eventually "Bear with big hands" won and he rejected the other two. He always carries Bear by his arm and his grey stuffed kitty cat that you see in some photos by the tail. As a mom, I think it's adorable and I'm happy to capture the one thing that brings my son comfort when he's sad, tired, ill, or just down. Bear goes everywhere with him in our house but NEVER leaves (just in case!)

52 Week Project ::Week 8:: Low Light

This week's assignment was fun. LOW LIGHT!!! I almost immediately knew I'd capture my son with the iPad, something that he's glued to sometimes. But we never let him have it in bed. For this assignment, I let him so that I can capture what I call the "zombie stare" as he watches Scooby Doo episodes on Netflix. ;) The ISO is at 25,000 on these, so I'm embracing the grain. Enjoy both the color and B&W versions. I can't tell which one I like best.

52 Week Project ::Week 7:: Backlighting

I love backlighting. You can really capture some great photos and images with the light behind a subject. Think summer sunsets! Backlighting is also very difficult to pull off. There's no light on the front of them and you run the risk of dark faces and bright backgrounds. Yep. You've all done it. Well, I've done it too, but have learned how to meter to expose my subject properly over the years. I fully intended to take my son to the beach this week and capture a nice winter sunset with snow on the sand. Unfortunately, mother nature decided it would be too cloudy for the type of photo I wanted to take. So, PLAN B: Mojitos! I decided to capture an everyday object and what's better than fresh mint and a nice cool drink to make me wish it's summer time! So, here's my backlit Mojito!

Ok and one more for fun. I had a newborn shoot in Long Island City today and this was the view from my car window from my parking spot. (Taken with an iPhone but still awesome!) So here's my bonus photo: NYC backlit at sunset! ENJOY!

52 Week Project ::Week 6:: Directional Lighting

Ok, I'm cheating a bit this week. Don't hate me. I'm sick and just haven't had a minute to take anything worth sharing this week, so I'm digging into my archives for an oldie but goodie. This is a photo of my dad. 2 years ago, he was in a terrible motorcycle accident where he suffered a traumatic brain injury. His life has never been the same since. He lives in a nursing home and needs 24 hour care. In this photo, you can see his off camera gaze, typical for him because of the brain injury. In the background, you can see his feeding tube machine. It's quite a sad situation compared to the life he used to live BUT I love this photo for so many reasons. One of them is because I still have a dad around to see, hug, kiss, and take pictures of. Also, when I took this, I finally "saw" the light and how it fell on his face. I sat there, in his nursing home room, and just snapped and snapped turning him in his wheelchair in all different directions until it was just right. He sat there as patient as can be and just let me take the photos. Gotta love this man! So, yes, it's a 2 year old photo but it'll have to do for this week until I'm well enough to take one worth sharing.

52 Week Project ::Week5:: Candid Image

I love to take candid photos of my son while playing. It's fun to capture him as is on a normal, wearing-PJs-'til-noon-on-a-Saturday kind of day. I couldn't decide which of these two I loved best, so I decided to post both. The first one is him playing with his favorites: Legos and cars & trucks. He loves to build cities out of Legos then drive cars and trucks around them. Fun, right?

This other image is of him "stealing" a snack. He already had most of them and I took them away so his appetite for dinner doesn't get spoiled. Um, yeah. That didn't work. He continually stole them so instead of fighting a losing battle, I took these photos to one day show him how big he's getting (and defiant!)

6 month old beauty

Yes, she's 6 months old. Yes, she's a beauty. But she's more than that. She's smiley, happy, and just amazing all around. I was so happy to have the opportunity to be there when her mommy and daddy got married. They let me practice taking photos at their Fire Island beach wedding. Then, when her mommy was pregnant, I took maternity photos and was there to celebrate her soon-to-be arrival at the baby shower. Then she was finally born. I was there for the newborn photos. And now these... 6 months old and her first Valentine's Day. I just love this baby girl. And her mom and dad too! ;)

52 Week Project ::Week 4:: Your Town

I mentioned it previously, but I'll repeat it again... I'm taking part in a personal project for 2014. I'm doing what they call a 52 week photo project. Yes, there are 52 weeks in a year, so each week, I'll be taking and submitting a photo based on a specific theme. I'm also part of a Blog Circle. A group of photographers, both hobbyists and professionals, are all working on the same project and we're going to share links to each other's blogs week after week. You'll actually be able to see ALL of our work if you follow the links from one page to the next. So, I invite you to see Christine's blog and see how she interpreted this week's theme. Click here for her blog! I hope you enjoy what you see. It's kind of fun to see how different people choose to interpret the same theme.

This week the theme is MY TOWN. My town. Hmmmm…. I live on Long Island so my town is really not just a town, but the region. I think many Long Islanders feel the same way. I’m from Commack, live in the Town of Smithtown, in Suffolk County, on the north shore, on Long Island, in New York…. the list goes on and on. So, could I go to Target or Home Depot and the nail salon and say this is “my town”? Should I think about landmarks or points of interest? Yes. I live halfway between New York City and The Hamptons. I have beaches both north and south of me for miles in each direction. It’s only fitting that I showcase “my town” in this way. So, I made a post card. This is the Fire Island Lighthouse, on the south shore of Long Island. Well, it’s on the barrier island just south of the south shore, if you want to be exact…. So GREETINGS FROM LONG ISLAND, MY TOWN!

52 Week Project ::Week 3:: Your Favorite

This week, it’s all about photographing “Your favorite _____. ” It can be a person, object, place, whatever. As a family, we ventured out to the south shore of Long Island and visited the Fire Island Lighthouse. While climbing up the 168 steps to the top, I was able to capture my two favorite guys from a really cool perspective.

I also cheated a bit this week and added in a second photo. This one captures my son and his favorites right now. Here he is eating his favorite snack (popcorn) while watching his favorite movie (The Lorax) with his favorite gal (Nee Nee). I love the lighting and wanted to capture them as they were in the moment. I really love this image!

52 Week Project ::Week 2:: House on Fire

Week 2 Assignment: If your house was on fire and you knew everyone was safe, what would you try to save? This was a difficult assignment for me because I tend to hold on to a lot of things. I don’t necessarily have heirlooms or anything like that, but little things that make me happy. When my son was 2, he painted a little bird house for me for Mother’s Day. It’s half painted and half raw wood. I love it. But would I grab it? I don’t think I would. Only because that is one of THOUSANDS of things I’d want to grab. So, I settled on two things: My laptop and my wedding rings. My laptop holds all my photos and home videos. I’d DIE without those. It also stores account passwords and other important things that, frankly, would be so annoying to have to figure out if I didn’t have it. I’d grab my rings simply because they mean so much to me. I didn’t meet my husband until I was 32 and always dreamed that whoever I’d marry would be perfect. Well, he is (most of the time). I waited my whole life to meet him and these rings symbolize an entirely new phase of my life. It’s what I’ve wanted for a very long time. Because of him, I have my son and what I hope is a lifetime of happiness and companionship. So, here are my “House on Fire” objects.

Yes, a selfie. A picture of myself. I took the easy route for this one and used my iPhone. I do plan on trying it again with my “good” camera, but for now, I’m happy with this!

Precious Little Girl

After so many newborn boys, it was fun to finally have a girl in the studio! Oh my gosh. Purples & pinks… ribbons and pearls….flowers and feathers…. What’s not to love? Oh and her two older brothers were so cute too!

Yep! I’m now officially a nationally known photographer. It happened. I made it big time. Well, ok, I’ll confess. Someone out of state asked some locals to me for a reference for a photographer so she can buy her son and daughter in law a gift certificate for family portraits. My name came up. So, she booked me all the way from Ohio! However you want to call it, I was honored to be chosen and that she booked this session for such a great family. These 3 were great. I even got to meet the gifter in person, fresh off her flight from Ohio to Long Island! She tagged along at our shoot! Yes, she traveled half way across the country to meet me. Ok, no. Again I confess. She was here to visit and the photoshoot just happened to coincide with her visit. It all about how you view it, right? Anyway, enough of that. ENJOY these photos!!!!

Another newborn boy! That makes 3 in a row. No 4 in a row if you count twins. ;) This little guy slept the entire time and I swear if I tried, I bet I could tie him in a knot. He was a dream to work with!

I was so honored when my coworker and friend asked me to take photos of her new baby boy. Her older son was so great and was my “helper” for part of the session. I loved taking these photos and I hope you love looking at them!

Two little boys. So cute, so tiny. Both with very distinct personalities – even at 10 days old. One was awake and alert, watching my every move. The other so content on sleeping for hours. I’m so curious to know what they’ll be like when they’re 5, 15 or even 25. Will they still have those same traits? Will one still be alert and attentive while the other laid back and relaxed? Time will tell……

Brothers will always have a strong bond. These two definitely had a lot of fun together on this shoot – almost too much fun. We laughed, played, chased, wrestled, and ran around, but in the end, I’m happy with the shots we got. Take a look!

These brothers just seem to have a special bond. When I met this family, the older brother introduced himself (and his age) to me and then immediately introduced his little brother. I learned his age, birthday, type of birthday party he had, his favorite food, color, and I think his shoe size! LOL They were such great brothers to work with and I could tell the little one definitely looked up to his older brother. Enjoy some of my favorites from this session.

These 3 boys were a blast to work with. They really loved working in front of the camera. Between throwing a football around, sitting still for some poses, and getting a little more than their feet wet, it was a great session overall. Here are some of my favorites, including an outtake at the end! I guess my lens buddy functions better as a bracelet than as a prop to wear on my lens to get his attention! :D

Yes, they’re pretty and easy to photograph, but let me tell you something. When I first met them, they instantly hugged me and held my hands (one on either side) as we walked down the boardwalk to our shooting location. They’re so sweet and I had so much fun at this session. Ah! I’m in love!

I truly think the sunset on this night was the most beautiful one I’ve ever seen. I’m not kidding. It was amazing! This family got so very lucky to have booked a session on this night! They definitely got the best deal of the season!

These two boys were so fun to photograph. When I first met this family, the older boy came right up and asked me, “What are you doing here?” I gave it right back and asked him the same thing! Smiles for miles….. we instantly hit it off. They were so much fun and full of energy! It was nearly impossible to get both to look at the camera and smile at one time. But don’t worry, I managed to get a few! But I also got lots of outtakes! I love so many photos from this session!

Summer Sunset Sessions

I live on Long Island so we’re surrounded by beautiful beaches and water. So why not offer sunset photos at the beach? I did just that and sessions sold out in just days. I was so excited! Now, I’m even more excited because I’m finally taking all those photos and for the entire summer, I’ll be sharing them here!

Last night was the first of many summer sunset beach sessions. This family is just gorgeous and their little party of 3 will soon be a party of 5 in November! Yep, they’re expecting TWINS!!!! How exciting!? I hope you enjoy these photos. I had so much fun taking them!!!!

My friend Rebecca is one of those people who keeps you laughing, even if you don’t realize it. She’s beautiful inside and out. When she had her baby boy, I was lucky enough to spend a few days at her house with my stuff all over the place to give her these amazing newborn photos. We got some great ones and were able to use lots of props. I love each and every one of these.

I love babies and I especially love to photograph them when they turn 1. They have no interest in sitting for photos and quite often are on the move which makes getting even one photo impossible. But I love it anyway. Here’s baby C and a few of his older brother N. Aren’t they handsome guys?

When I was in middle school and high school, I was very much into photography. I took a lot of courses and in fact, went to a specialized HS for photography. I always wanted to do something with it when I grew up. But the reality is that a career in photography isn’t so stable and I decided to take the safe route and become a teacher. Only when my son was born did I decide to make this hobby of mine more a part of my life. Gradually, I decided to go into business and I’m so happy I did. I’ve met so many amazing people and really enjoy every minute of it. Here are two photos – one of my favorite things: Lilacs!!!!! The other is a copy of a page from my HS journal. I guess I was given the assignment of writing about what I’d like to do in the future. I’m happy my mom found this journal because it’s loaded with hours of entertainment when reading it. Oh silly me – how young I was! Consider yourselves rock stars when you book photos with me. Read and see why. LOL

I always seem to wind up with newborn boys. I love boys. I have a son of my own, so what’s not to love? BUT I really appreciate when a client has a baby girl because I have so many bows and headbands to use on them for photos. Here are some of my favorites from this little girl’s newborn session. I got lucky she also has a gorgeous older sister who posed for me as well. ;)
